Dry Eyes:
What are the Common Causes of Dry Eyes ?
- Dry eyes can effect anyone, though they
are more common in older people.
- Dry eyes are due to a reduction in the
normal amount of tears.
- Many people have no apparent cause for
the reduction in tears.
- Medication can sometimes cause dry eyes,
in particular some diuretics (water tablets), antidepressants and
antidepressants and antihistamines.
- Some arthritic conditions, such as
Sjögren's syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis are associated with dry
eyes.
What are the the Symptoms of Dry Eyes ?
- There may be a gritty or burning feeling
in the eyes. Heaviness or drooping of the eyelids and difficult opening the
eyes may result
- Both eyes are usually
affected.
- The eyes are NOT red.
- There may be slight blurring of the
vision from time to time.
What is the Treatment for Dry Eyes ?
- Dry eyes can usually not be cured but
can be relieved.
- Relief comes in the form of 'artificial
tears' eye drops.
- There are several brands available at
pharmacies or on prescription.
- They do not need to be used regularly to
keep symptoms away.
