Deep pain in the ear can be caused by a blocked Eustachian tube which connects the throat to the back of the ear. Its job is to keep air pressure equal on both sides of the eardrum. Blockage causes the eardrum to bulge, particularly painful during aeroplane flights. Swallowing hard and sucking on boiled sweets during take off and landing helps equalise air pressure. Colds are a common culprit in children. Infection of the middle ear behind the eardrum can be very painful until the pus is allowed to escape through the eardrum. Most earaches will settle themselves and can be helped without needing medicines from your doctor.
Opening up the Eustachian tube by sucking boiled sweets, steam inhalation or nose drops really does help. Paracetamol helps ease the pain in both adults and children.
